Superconducting Spin

Researchers at Cambridge University have shown that some superconductors can carry currents of spin, which is normally carried in non-superconducting, non-magnetic materials by individual electrons. The successful pairing of superconductivity and spin will result in drastic reduction in energy consumption of high performance computing. In a conventional superconductor electrons with opposite spins are paired together so that a flow of electrons carries zero spin. By creating a pure spin supercurrent , the team of researchers aims to create a super-conducting technology which could use massively less energy than the present silicon-based electronics.
